The attitude of the British Government towards the Indian Press : (i) Restrictions were imposed on the Indian Press up-to 1835 by Charles Metcalfe. (ii) The Vernacular Press Act of 1878 curbed the freedom of Indian Press particularly of the Indian language newspapers. (iii) The Act was repealed in 1882. (iv) The press enjoyed considerable freedom for 25 years. (v) After Swadeshi and Boycott movement of 1905 __ in 1908 and 1910 repressive press laws were introduced. The main reason - to check the rising tide of Indian nationalism and anti - British feelings among the Indians. |
