why does iron nail placed in a copper sulphate solution become brownish in colour?

Iron is a more reactive metal than copper. This means the iron will want to be attached to the sulphate ions more than the copper will.

The iron, therefore, goes into solution with the sulphate ions and the copper becomes solid metal where the iron was. Copper, being brown, makes the apparent color change.
