National Highways in Kerala
Government of India vide Notification No. S.O.542(E) dated 5th March 2010 has proposed to rename all National Highways. The revised Names are as follows:
NH 66 This highway starts from its junction with NH-48 near Panvel connecting Indapur, Mahad, Rajapur, Kudal in the State of Maharashtra, Panaji, Margao in the State of Goa, Karwar, Honavar, Udupi, Mangalore in the State of Karnataka, Kasaragod, Kannur, Ponnani, Edappalli, Ernakulam, Thiruvanamthapuram in the State of Kerala and terminates at its junction with NH-44 near Kanniyakumari in the State of Tamil Nadu. NH 85 This highway starts from its junction with NH-66 near Kochi in the State of Kerala connecting Ernakulam, Muvattupula, Devikulam in the State of Kerala, Teni, Madurai, Piruppuvanam, Povandhi, Sivaganga, Kalaiyarkoil, Tiruvadanai and terminates at Tondi point in the State of Tamil Nadu. NH 183 This highway starts from its junction with NH-83 near Dindigul connecting Teni, Uttamapalayam in the State of Tamilnadu, Kumily, Pirmed, Kanjirappali, Kottayam, Adur and terminating at its junction with NH-744 near Kottarakara in the State of Kerala. NH 544 This highway starts from its junction with NH-44 near Salem connecting Coimbatore in the State of Tamil Nadu Palakkad, Thrissur and terminates at its junction with NH-66 near Ernakulam in the State of Kerala. NH 744 This highway starts from its junction with NH-44 near Tirumangalam connecting Sriviiliputtur, Rajapalaiyam, Tenkasi, Puliyur in the State of Tamil Nadu. Punalur, Kottarakara and terminates at its junction with NH-66 near Kollam in the State of Kerala. NH 766 This highway starts from its junction with NH-66 near Kozikode connecting Kalpetta in the State of Kerala, Gundlulpet, Mysore and terminates at its junction with NH-948 near Kollegal in the State of Karnataka. NH 966 This highway starts from its junction with NH-66 near Ferokh and terminates at its junction with NH-544 near Palakkad in the State of Kerala. NH 966 A This highway starts from its junction with NH-544 near Kalamassery after crossing NH-66. and terminates at Vallarpadam in the State of Kerala. NH 966 B This highway starts from its junction with NH-66 and terminates at Willington Island in the State of Kerala. Earlier Status NH 47: Salem - Kanyakumari Enters the State at Walayar and leaves at Kalyikkavila. Entire reach developed (324 Km) to 2 lane standard except for stretches in:
Bypasses at Palakkad (9 km), Thrissur (10.4 km), Chalakudy (6.1 km), Kochi (21 km) and Thiruvananthapuram (22.7 km) have been constructed. There are 22 major bridges and 37 minor bridges in the Kerala portion. A parallel bridge has been contructed at Aluva near Marthanda Varma bridge (km.330/225) and opened to traffic on 22nd June 2002. Two more bridges namely Chavara bridge and Irumbupalam are to be reconstructed. Akkulam Bridge on Thiruvananthapuram bypass has been completed. The Railway Overbridge at Chackai near Thiruvananthapuram and the bypass from Kazhakuttam to Kovalam have been completed providing easy access to Kovalam and Technopark. NH 17: Panavel - Edappally Declared as NH in March 1972. Enters the State at Thalapadi and joins NH 47 at Edappally (Km 438/827). There are 26 major bridges and 28 minor bridges.Varapuzha bridge in NH 17 was constructed and opened for traffic on 16.1.2001. Bypasses completed at Vadakara - (3 Km). Bypasses to be built at Kannur, Kozhikode, Thalassery - Mahe and Kodungalloor. Railway Overbridges (ROBs) have been completed at Kuttippuram, Vellayil, Vengali, Tirur, Meenchantha,Chengottukavu and Vengalam. Contruction of ROBs at Chorode, Nandi, and Muzhuppilangad is in progress. ROBs are proposed to be constructed at Pallikkara, Padannakkad, Chovva, Nadal, Edappally and Azhiyoor (Construction in progress). NH 49: Kochi - Madurai Declared as NH in February 1989. The National Highway 49 Enters the State at Bodimettu (km 119/017) and joins the NH 47 (Ending at Kundanoor (km 286/600) in Cochin Bypass.Three bypasses are to be constructed at Trippunithura, Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam. This National Highway passes through the famous tourist centre at Munnar. From Bodimettu to Neryamangalam (km.200), it passes through the high ranges of Western Ghats. |
