what is the difference between cyanide and cyanate?

The cyanate ion is an anion with the chemical formula written as [OCN]? or [NCO]?. In aqueous solution it acts as a base, forming isocyanic acid, HNCO.
A cyanide is any chemical compound that contains monovalent combining group CN. This group, known as the cyano group, consists of a carbon atom triple-bonded to a nitrogen atom.
