Surat split is an important event in the modern history of India. It took place in 1907 at Surat, at the bank of Tapti river; when the moderates parted company with the Extremists.It was to be held at Nagpur, but Nagpur was the stronghold of Bal Gangadhar Tilak. The moderates were aware that the local delegates would raise the issue in favour of the extremist. So Gopal Krishna Gokhle changed the venue to Surat. The extremist camp was led by Lal Bal Pal and the moderates camp was led by Gopal Krishna Gokhle. The session was presided by Dr. Rash Behari Ghosh. |
