What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the decomposition of a chemical compound (electrolyte) in the aqueous or fused (molten) state by the passage of a direct electric current resulting in the discharge of ions .-as neutral atoms - at the respective electrodes .
.     Decomposition of electrolyte -  in aqueous or fused state by passage of electric current Na Cl  electrolyte Na1+  (cation ) Cl1-(anion)
.    Discharge of ions _as neutral atoms at the respective electrodes .
At cathode :  Na1+ + 1e- Na   (neutral atom ) -reduction reaction (negative electrode )
At anode : Cl1-  -1e-   Cl (neutral atom ) -Oxidation reaction (positive electrode )
.  Electrolysis involves  -a oxidation and a reduction reaction .
