If one solution of the equation 3x2 = 8x + 2k + 1 is 7 times the other.Find the solution and the value of k. (3marks)

3x2 -8x - (2k+1) = 0

Let a and b are the zeros.

Given condition is b = 7a

Hence the roots are a , 7a.

a + 7a = 8/3

8a = 8/3
a = 1/3
Hence the roots are 1/3 and 7/3.

1/3 * 7/3 = -(2k+1) /3

7 = -3(2k+1)

7 = -6k -3

6k = -10

k = -10/6
