The chemical name for sugar is sucrose. This organic compound which is
used in sweetening is also known as saccharose in some quarters. Sucrose
is a disaccharide which is made by combining glucose and fructose.
The ordinary table sugar scientifically known as sucrose is made up of a
combination of glucose and fructose. The chemical formula of sucrose is
C12H22O11. It is called a disaccharide because it is composed of the
two sugar units.
