Ask a Teacher

is alcohol acidic or basic?

An alcohol is an organic compound in which the hydroxyl functional group (-OH) is bound to a carbon atom. Alcohols can be both acid and basic ie amphoteric depending upon situation.

It has a typical acidic property when it reacts with sodium metal to liberate hydrogen gas.
It is basic as a proton can protonate oxygen atom because oxygen has two lone pairs of electrons.
