What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is one of the chemical effects of current.Electrolysis is the process of chemical decomposition of a liquid by the passage of electric current. The liquid which undergo electrolysis is called electrolyte.Elctrolytic conduction is due to the motion of both positive and negative ions. The plates through which current enters or leaves the electrolyte are called electrode. The electrode through which current enters is called anode and the electrolyte through which current leaves is called cathode.
Electrolysis literally means splitting by electricity.
