What is meant by mitosis and meiosis

Mitosis and meiosis are two types of cell divisions present in organisms.
  • Mitosis takes place in vegetative cells. In mitosis, the mother  cell divides to form two daughter cells which are exact copies of the mother cell. Here, the ploidy will be same for mother and daughter cells. So it is known as equational division.
  • Meiosis takes place in reproductive cells during gamete formation. Here, a mother cell divides to form four daughter cells. The main feature of meiosis is that the daughter cells will have only half the number of chromosomes of that of the parent cell. So it is known as reduction division.
