what is surface tension?

Surface tension is a property of a liquid by which the free surface of a liquid behaves as a stretched elastic membrane, having a contractile tendency. The surface tension is measured by the force acting pert unit length of an imaginary line on the free surface of the liquid at rest. The direction of force is at right angles to the line and is tangential to the liquid surface.
Surface tension=Force/length
Unit is N/m.
