Matter Matter is defined as anything which occupies space .Matter is composed of smaller particles called atoms, molecules,or ions .Spaces or gaps exist between the particles .The particles attract each other with a force and the inter-molecular force decreases with increasing distance. States of matter All matter exists in one of the three phases that is in solid, liquid and in gaseous . Solids Solids have a definite mass ,volume and shape and are rigid. They cannot flow and are incompressible .In solids, particles are very closely packed and can only vibrate about their mean position Inter molecular force between the particles is maximum and the inter molecular distance is minimum in solids . Liquids Liquids have a definite mass and volume but no definite shape and are less rigid. They can flow and take up the shape of the container and are very slightly compressible .In liquids, particles are comparatively less compact and the molecules are free to move only within the liquids . Gases Gases have a definite mass but have no volume or shape. They can flow and take up the shape of the container in which they are stored .They have minimum compactness and particles are free to move in any direction.Their inter-particle attraction is negligible. Explanation of change of matter 1.Liquid state to solid state Solidification Process of change from liquid state to solid state at a particular temperature . 2.Liquid state to gaseous state Vaporization Process of change from liquid state to gaseous state . 3.Gaseous state to liquid state Condensation process of change from gaseous state to liquid state without any fall ion temperature is called condensation. 3.Solid state to gaseous state Sublimation the process due to which a solid directly changes to gaseous state and when cooling directly changes back to solid state ,without changing into liquid state .The vapor formed is called sublime . Law of conservation of mass In any chemical reaction, the total mass of the reacting substances is equal to the total mass of the products of the reaction-provided masses, are measured under similar conditions . |
