Vembanad Lake is the biggest back water in Kerala. Vembanad Lake is used for the transporting of commodities through canoes "Kettuvallam". Travel through lake is in general as most of the households have small canoes of their own. One can see small canoes everywhere that connect the backwaters in Kuttanad. Even the households materials like Provisions, indigo, needles, glass, knives and vessels were brought through these canoes. Canoeists who sell the goods are called "Muttakkar". Trip to Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi is possible through these backwaters. Even today boat services of Kerala State Water Transport Corporation (KSWTC) are operational in Kuttanad. Most of the houses in Kuttanad are built on the banks of rivers or canals that lead to the lake which are rich in the availability of fish, one of the essential edible items of Kuttanad people. Each and every family catches fish from their own ponds and canals fed by the lake. When the water is drained for cultivation they used to get good catch. This is also a source of income for the people. Growing Duck in the swamp and canal formed by the lake is another occupation of the Kuttanad people. Once the harvest is over, these Ducks; are brought to the paddy field. In the paddy field after harvest, there used to be the spilled grains of paddy and fish. This is the food for Ducks. In several places of Kuttanad, people used to dip into the canal to collect shells, used for ornaments and cement. Immersing the coconut husk into the backwater soaking it to become soft and then beating it nicely to make coir is also another occupation in this area. |
