N.Kumaran Asan, Vallathol Narayana Menon and Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer are regarded as the triumvirates (Kavithrayam) of modern Malayalam literature.

N. Kumaran Asan (1873–1924), also known as Mahakavi Kumaran Asan (the prefix Mahakavi awarded by Madras University in the year 1922 means "great poet" and the suffix Asan meaning scholar or teacher), was one of the triumvirate poets of Kerala, South India. He was also a philosopher, a social reformer and a disciple of Sree Narayana Guru.

Kumaran Asan initiated a revolution in Malayalam poetry in the first quarter of the 20th century, transforming it from the metaphysical to the lyrical. Deep moral and spiritual commitment is evident in Asan's poetry. His works are an eloquent testimony of poetic concentration and dramatic contextualization.

Vallathol Narayana Menon (1878–1958), popularly known as Mahakavi, was a poet in the Malayalam language, which is spoken in the south Indian state of Kerala. K. M. George has noted that, together with Kumaran Asan, Menon was "responsible for bringing about a revolutionary change in Malayalam poetry in the [nineteen]-twenties. Asan concentrated on social themes and Vallathol championed the national movement; yet both made very significant contributions to the khandkavya.

Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer (1877-1949) commonly known as Ulloor, was a famous Malayalam poet and a noted historian. He was one of the famous triumvirate poets of Kerala, South India in the first half of the 20th century
