explain why a gap is left between two consecutive rails?

Railway tracks are provided with  gaps to allow  expansion when the tracks heated  up. As the tracks get hotter, they expand and get slightly larger. If separation is absent, the tracks would buckle from the force of the expansion. In a continuously welded rail these gaps are often cut on a diagonal to prevent misalignment. The thermal expansion and contraction of rail track is minimal and the forces push to the outside rather than along the rail.
