what is frequency

The number of vibrations made by the particle of the medium in one second is called the frequency of the wave.It is denoted by the letter n,f,   (neu).Its S.I. unit is second -1 or  hertz (Hz).The frequency   and time period T are related as 
                                                                                 
                                                                               = 1/T      
The frequency of a wave can also be defined as the number of waves passing through a point in 1 second.It is the characteristics of  its source which produces the disturbance.The frequency of a wave is numerically equal to the frequency of vibrations of its source.It does not depend on the amplitude of vibration or the nature of the medium in which it  propogates.
