what is islets of langerhans?what it produce |
The Islets of Langerhans, known as "islets," are clusters of cells scattered throughout the pancreas. It makes up only 1-2 % of the entire organ. These are the cells that are attacked and destroyed in type 1 diabetes. Within each islet cluster, there are a variety of cell types, one of which is the beta cell. Beta cells sense sugar in the blood and release the necessary amount of insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels. The alpha cells produce glucagon, and the beta cells produce insulin . |
