what is the source of energy for inhabitants of deep(>500m)in the oceans?

Deep-sea creatures have a very limited diet. Because no light penetrates to this part of the ocean, photosynthesis is impossible. Only at the thermal springs of the deep-sea is new biomass generated through chemosynthesis instead of photosynthesis. In areas other than these, fish must rely on hunting and scavenging on debris of dead fish that sink to the bottom. Some, like salps, have large tentacles that they cast out and find food with.
