WHAT WERE THE ACTIVITIES DONE BY VAKKOM MAULAVI FOR THE MUSLIM SOCIETY?????????????????? |
Vakkom Moulavi was born, on 23rd December1873, only Sixteen years after
the Sepoy Mutiny as the British call it or the First War of
Independence, as we wish to call it which finally ended up with the
consolidation of British power in India and the impoverishment of the
Indian people. The report of the 1872 Census of Travancore shows that
the people who could just read and write were only 5.74% of the
population, with female literacy rate only 0.46%. The Muslim literacy
was lower than State average but surprisingly higher than that of
Eazhavas. We have to realize that Vakkom Maulavi became a scholar and
linguist under such conditions. His writings bear testimony to his
command of Malayalam language. Vakkom Abdul Khader Maulavi exhorted the Muslims to give up all un-islamic practices, take to Western liberal education and play leading role in all progressive social movements. He attempted to translate the Quran and other religious works into Malayalam and published a Malayalam magazine called Deepika in which the translation of the Quran appeared regularly. Maulavi Sahib also founded the Travancore Mahajana Sabha and Chirayinkil Taluk Muslim Samajam for promoting social service activities among the Muslims, but these were short-lived. In 1923 he inaugurated the Kerala Muslim Aikya sangham which provided a forum for kindred spirits to meet for purposes of discussion and provided progressive leadership to the community in social and religious matters. Whatever progress was achieved by the Muslim community of Kerala in later years should be attributed to the pioneering work done by Vakkom Abdul Khader Moulavi. |
