what is the role of the state in upholding freedom of its citizens

There is difference of opinions among writers regarding the role of the state in upholding the freedom of its citizens. Some people hold the view that the state and its law are hindrance in the way of liberty of the individual. They opine that more there is of law, the less there would be liberty. Excessive or oppressive laws of the state affect or even restrict liberty. Anarchists and individualists are of the opinion that the laws passed by the state curtail the liberty of the individual.

However This view is neither correct nor logical. The fact is that state and its laws do not curtail liberty, they in fact protect and enhance the liberty of the individual . Laws of the state determine. The liberty of the individual and in the absence of law, there is no freedom.

In the conclusion, we can say that when a law is made by the state keeping in mind the
Welfare of the people, it is bound to increase individual liberty.
