what is atom?

An atom is the smallest particle of an element which can take part in a chemical reaction and is considered the basic unit of matter .An atom consists of protons ,neutrons and electrons and they are called sub atomic particles . Protons and neutrons are found in the centre of the nucleus and the electrons revolve around the nucleus along imaginary paths known as orbits or orbitals .An atom of each element has its own characteristic number which distinguishes it from the atom of another element .
