The male pollen grains which are located in bags (anther ) go out of the anther . They are transported by air, water and insects to the stigma of the female flower (a sticky surface that receives the pollen grains). The grain to pollen moves in a tube from the stigma to the ovaire where the cellular division starts ends with the production of the fruit. In animals, sexual reproduction encompasses the fusion of two distinct gametes to form a zygote. Gametes are produced by a type of cell division called meiosis. Gametes are haploid (containing only one set of chromosomes) while the zygote is diploid (containing two sets of chromosomes). In most cases, the male gamete, called the spermatozoan, is relatively motile and usually has a flagellum. On the other hand, the female gamete, called the ovum, is nonmotile and relatively large in comparison to the male gamete. |
