Who was lord canning?

Lord Canning History (1856 – 1862) :
Lord Canning was the last Governor General and the first Viceroy of British India. Mutiny of 1857 took place during his time. On November 1, 1858, Queen's Proclamation was announced and the rule was passed on to the British crown. He withdrew Doctrine of Lapse.
The Universities of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras were established by him in 1857. The Indian Councils Act was passed in 1861by him.
