what is longitudinal wave?

A wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate back and forth in the same direction in which the wave is moving, is called a longitudinal wave.
A longitudinal wave propagates in the form of compressions and rarefactions.A compression and rarefaction together forms one wave.At the position of compression, the velocity of particle of medium is positive and maximum, while at the rarefaction, the velocity of the particle of medium is negative and maximum.
Longitudinal waves can be produced in all the three media i.e., solid, liquid and gas.
