Whenever the flux linked with a coil changes ,an e.m.f. is induced in the same coil .This phenomenon is called the self induction.

Self induction of a circuit is that property of the circuit which causes it to oppose any change in current flowing through it. It is also called the electromagnetic inertia of the circuit.
