what is the difference between caste and class? |
Caste means race, lineage or breed. It is a form of social stratification. It is charactersied by endogamy, hereditary transmission of a style of life which often includes an occupation, ritual status in a hierarchy, and customary social interaction. Historically, the caste system in India has consisted of thousands of endogamous groups called Jatis or Quoms. The scholarly Brahmans of India categorised the society into Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras and Dalits. Class means a group of persons sharing a similar social position and certain economic, political, and cultural characteristics. For Example, the lower income classes, the middle classes, the higher income classes, etc. |
