EXPLAIN ABOUT PEST RESISTANT PLANTS |
RNA interference (RNAi) is a naturally occurring mechanism that leads to the “silencing” of genes. It is a biological process that inhibits the expression of genes. RNA interference has been used particularly in the engineering of food plants that produce lower levels of natural plant toxins. RNA interference (RNAi) is emerging as an alternative genetic tool in the ongoing task of developing pathogen and pest-resistant crops. For example, Pest resistant plants are resistant to certain insect pests, through a built-in insecticide. These are the GM crops. (Genetically Modified crops) example: Cotton, maize etc. This pest resistant plant resists pests and it is considered as a better alternative to farming with insecticides. Using RNA interference helps to increase the crop yield and decrease pest. |
