L.E. Waterman of New York designed the first workable fountain pen in 1884. 

Lazlo Biro patented the first ballpoint pen in 1938. The principle of the ballpoint pen was patented by John Loud in 1888 but was never exploited. At the same time Bill Izneirb built a ballpen but did not patent it.
