what's the function of stomata |
A stomate is an opening in the surface of a leaf that allows the exchange of gases (as well as transpiration). Basically this means that it allows Carbon Dioxide to enter the plant through the leaves (used for photosynthesis) and releases Oxygen and water vapour (products of respiration). When a plant encounters adverse environmental conditions, such as drought, a plant hormone called abscisic acid triggers stomata to shut tightly in order to prevent plants from dehydration and wilting. |
