which is the common food preservative?

Sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate are commonly used to preserve meat products. Butylated Hydroxytoluene, or BHT, is a food preservative  also prevents oils in food from becoming rancid.(Used in cereals, potato chips etc).
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is antioxidant that is commonly used as a food preservative.
