Acid : A sour tasting compound that releases hydrogen ion to form a solution into a pH of less than 7, reacts with a base to form a salt and turns blue litmus red. Example : HCl, H2SO4, HNO3 etc. Base : A compound that releases hydrogen ions to form a solution with a pH greater than 7, reacts with acids to form salts and turns red litmus paper to blue colour. Example : NaOH, CaCOHl2, NH4OH. Salt : Salts are formed by the neutralisation reaction of an acid by a base. They are ionic compounds formed by a number of positively changed ions, cations and anions (negative ions) so that the product is electrically neutral. Example : NaCl, CaSO4 etc. |
