What is projectile motion?

A projectile is an object that is thrown into air and then moves under the influence of gravity alone.
Since the projectile moves horizontally as well as vertically,it is a case of two dimensional motion.i.e.,motion in a plane. Therefore, two coordinates are required to specify the position of the projectile at any time. The projectile motion is the most familiar case of motion in a plane with constant acceleration. This constant acceleration has a vertically downward direction and its magnitude is g (= 9.8 m/s2 )
The following are the examples of projectile motion :
(i) A body dropped from the window of a moving train.
(ii) A bullet fired from the gun.
(iii)An athlete doing the high jump.
(iv) A cricket ball thrown in any direction.
(v) A hammer thrown by an athlete.
