Why a labourer makes a cut on the tree in the side facing the direction in which he wants to fall?

The labourer won't cut all the way through. Instead, leave a "hinge" of about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters). The hinge will stop the tree from immediately falling down, giving him a chance to get out of the way.As soon as the hinge is made he will get out of the way.The tree will start shaking and wobbling, and will soon fall down.
