What are agrochemicals and what are their effects? |
Agrochemical is a term used to refer to the various chemical products used in agriculture such as fertilisers, pesticides and soil conditioners. Agrochemicals are used in agricultural setting in an effort to ensure an abundant food supply. There are, however, many negative effects of agrochemicals. Some of these agrochemicals, more commonly called pesticides, reach many organisms that were not the intended target. So while the pesticides are great and maybe even necessary to protect food crops from deadly bacteria, the chemicals in the pesticide also end up contaminating land, water, animals, and humans. The negative effects on humans depend on the toxicity of the chemicals and the duration of the exposure. Possible harmful effects on humans include birth defects, blood and nerve disorders, tumors, and even comas and death. |
