physical and chemical properties of alkanes

Physical Properties
The physical properties of alkanes differ for each one. For an example, the boiling point of alkanes can occur between -162 degrees Celsius and 625 degrees Celsius.Alkanes are virtually insoluble in water, but dissolve in organic solvents. The liquid alkanes are good solvents for many other covalent compounds.
Chemical Properties
1) They combust in oxygen to form carbon dioxide, water and heat. It is this heat which makes them good fuel sources.
C2H6 (g) + 7/2 O2(g)  ? 2CO2(g) + 3H2O(g) + heat
2) They undergo substitution reactions with halogens in the presents of UV light.
CH4(g) + Cl2(g)   ? CH4Cl(g) + HCl(g)
