Which are the diseases of neuron?

The motor neuron diseases (MNDs) are a group of progressive neurological disorders that destroy motor neurons, the cells that control essential voluntary muscle activity such as speaking, walking, breathing, and swallowing.  Normally, messages from nerve cells in the brain (called upper motor neurons) are transmitted to nerve cells in the brain stem and spinal cord (called lower motor neurons) and from them to particular muscles.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a motor neuron disease that causes degeneration throughout the brain and spinal cord, and affects about 30,000 people in the United States. While there is no cure, there are strategies to both lengthen and improve quality of life.

The term ataxia refers to a group of progressive neurological diseases that affect coordination and balance. Ataxias are often characterized by poor coordination of hands and eye movements, speech problems and a wide-based and unsteady gait.
