The sum of the squares of two consecutive odd numbers is 290. a)If an odd number is written as x, what is the next odd number? b)Write the given facts as an equation and find the numbers.
a)The two numbers  are x and x+2.
b)According to the given condition,
            x2+(x+2)2=290
 ie, x2 + x2 + 4x + 4 = 290
 implies 2x2 + 4x - 286 = 0
ie, x2 + 2x - 143 = 0
ie, (x + 13)(x - 11 ) = 0 implies x = -13 or x = 11
Hence the numbers are 11 and 13.
