WHAT IS AN ESTER?

An ester is an organic compound where the hydrogen in the compound's carboxyl group is replaced with a hydrocarbon group.
Formula of Ester is R-CO-OR'( Where R,R' are Alkyl or Aryl groups)

Example:
Ethyl acetate is an ester. The hydrogen on the carboxyl group of acetic acid is replaced with an ethyl group. ie.,C2H5COOCH3
Esters can be obtained by the reaction of an acid and alcohol.  Here Ethyl acetate is formed by Ethyl alcohol and Acetic acid.
