explain wurtz reaction?

Wurtz Reaction:

Wurtz Reaction is the coupling of two alkyl halide molecules to form an alkane.
When 2 molecules of alkyl halides are reacted  with sodium (Na) metal in the presence of dry ether, alkanes are formed having even no of carbon atoms, along with formation of sodium halide .

Mechanism of the Wurtz Reaction

EX:

CH3Cl + 2Na + CH3Cl  DRY ETHER>      CH3-CH3 + 2NaCl

The Wurtz reaction is not suitable for tertiary alkyl halides due to side reaction involving elimination reactions.
