What is convection?

When a liquid or a gas is heated, then the molecules near the heat source get heated up first. The hot liquid or gas is less dense than the cold liquid or gas. Therefore, the hotter molecules move up with the heat energy and colder molecules move down to equalize the pressure. Thus during the process, there is a large scale motion of molecules and heat is transferred from one place to another,This mechanism of heat transfer in liquids or gases is called convection.
