During heavy rain in the village the rainwater carry excessive fertilizers to a pond. How long it will affect the fish population in the long run? |
Carrying excessive fertilizers to ponds and lakes causes eutrophication which leads to oxygen depletion. Biodegradable substances do not accumulate for long time in the environment. Their break down helps in the replenishment of resources. Excessive accumulation and decomposition spoils the aquatic environment. Lack of oxygen and foul smell badly affects both flora and fauna present in the ponds. some sensive fishes may die off and some will persist. in the long run decompsers act and brings back to normal consition of the pond. Unwanted algae may grow faster because phosphates and nitrates will be more in storm waters. |
