Ask a Teacher

A solid weighs 80 gm in air,64 gm in water.Calculate the relative density of solid when kept in water.Also , state the object would float or sink.

Formula of Relative density(RD):

Wa / ( Wa-Ww)

Where Wa means weight  in air  &    Ww means weight in water

So From the data,

RD = 80 / (80-64)
      = 80 / 16
      = 5
Any substance whose RD less than one will float and greater  than one will sink
