what is overlay analysis?

Overlay analysis is a group of methodologies applied in optimal site selection or suitability modeling. It is a technique for applying a common scale of values to diverse and dissimilar inputs to create an integrated analysis. Overlay functions create a new layer with combined attributes. It is noted that areas on different layers may not overlap exactly.

Overlay examples:
  • Find inexpensive houses in a good school district.
  • Find where fishing grounds overlap with potential oil drilling sites.
  • Location of farm fields on highly erodible soil.
