why do animals living in cold region have thick fur?

Thick fur allows animals living in cold regions to keep the body warmth just like the blanket keep us warm. The air trapped between the fiber or fur will have the same temperature as the body and hence prevents the body temperature from escaping into the cold atmosphere. Those animals that do not have thick fur (whales, seals, dolphins) have thick layer of fat underneath the skin which does the same insulating function as the fur.
