Ans:The Rebellion of 1857 (also known as
the Indian Mutiny) was a watershed
event in the history of British
India. It was by far the largest, most widespread,
and dangerous
threat to British rule in India in the nineteenth century. The revolt
of 1857 started on May 10, 1857 with a mutiny by the sepoys of the
East India Company's Army in the Meerut Cantonment. From their, it
spread to other parts of the Gangetic plains and Central India with
major hostilities in the present day areas of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar,
northern Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region. The revolt ended with
the capture of Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Jhansi and Gwalior in 1858 by
the British. Other parts of India controlled by the Company like the
Bombay and Madras Presidencies were largely unaffected by the revolt. |
