what is the significance of Aryabhata ?

Aryabhata was the first Indian satellite. The Indian Space Research Organisation built this satellite under the guidance of the eminent scientist, U.R. Rao. The Indian made satellite was launched by the USSR. An agreement to this effect had been signed by India and the USSR in 1972.
Aryabhata was an experimental satellite. The satellite had twenty six sides, and it was covered by solar panels, except for the top and the bottom.
Aryabhata was launched on 19th April, 1975. After completing sixty orbits and four days in space, a power failure occurred, and all signals from the space craft were lost. The experiments came to a halt. The satellite re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere on 11th February 1992. The launch of Aryabhata was a big step forward for India’s space ventures. As a result, India’s capabilities in the field grew rapidly, and the country went on to develop its own carrier rockets and satellites. The satellite was named after Aryabhata, the famous astronomer of ancient India.
