What is 'Tardigrade'?
The microscopic tardigrade—also known as the water bear—is the only animal that can survive the cold, irradiated vacuum of outer space. Tardigrades are water-dwelling, segmented micro-animals, with eight legs. They were first described by the German pastor Johann August Ephraim Goeze in 1773.
