Explain hydrolysis, hydration and hydrogenation with examples.

Hydrolysis  :  The process in which the compound is reacted with water is called hydrolysis. Water reacts with oxides and halides of non metals and form the respective hydroxide .It also combines with carbides, nitrides and phosphides of few metals. Hydrolysis results in  change in the pH.

Hydration  :  The process of reacting of water with metals salt is called hydration as water readily reacts them to form compounds .,which are called hydrates and hence the process is called hydration . These hydrates are of three types .
(i) Hydrates in which water forms coordinate bond with metal ion

Example  :

(ii) Hydrates in which water molecules is join to oxygen containing anions ,hydrogen bonding

 Example  : CuSO4 5H2O

(iii) Hydrates in which water is present as interstitial  water BaCl22H2O

Hydrogenation   :  Reactions in which treating compounds with hydrogen in the presence of catalyst is called hydrogenation .These are reduction reactions. Hydrogenation of unsaturated fats produce saturated fats .Non catalytic hydrogenation requires high temperature.
