what are the main causes of poverty in our country? |
There are numerous reasons for poverty in India. they are: 1. British colonialisation and subsequent de-industrialization of India 2. Failure of land reforms and resultant inequalities in the distribution of income and wealth. 3. Backwardness in agriculture, particularly the backward condition of small and marginal farmers 4. Large scale migration of rural unemployed poor to urban areas is the main reason for urban poverty. 5. Rapid growth of population aggravated the problem of poverty in India. (India’s population in 1951 was 361 million rose to 1210 million in 2011). 6. Low levels of economic development and wide spread unemployment 7. Unequal distribution of income and wealth is one of the main reasons for poverty in India. 8. Under-utilization of natural resources led to the low economic growth. 9. Backwardness of agriculture and low productivity of agriculture 10. Social factors like caste system, joint family system, superstitions etc. 11. Failure of industrialization in supplementing economic growth and employment 12. Isolation and powerlessness of the mass population 13. Inflation (increase in prices of essential goods) adversely affects the low income groups. 14. Failure of poverty alleviation pogrammes in realizing the achieving the targets. 15. Corrupt and inefficient administration is another cause for poverty in India. |
